OTA Clinic Mingle!

Who: Anyone!
What: First aid/healing lessons, anyone who needs medical attention.
Where: The Clinic mostly, but potentially anywhere.
When: just after the move, open until the next mingle for anyone to stop by for lessons or treatment
Warnings: possibly injuries?

[ Shortly after the move, once Pell is certain the gods are no longer with them, he puts up another quick post. Text this time: ]

The Clinic has relocated but someone will be here at all times to provide medical attention to those who need it. Note the new indicator on the attached map, or call for help if you are injured and unable to get here.

Anyone who wanted lessons delayed by the involuntary memory transfers, I'll be holding first aid and healing lessons daily at noon, for approximately two hours. If you would prefer a private lesson that can also be arranged. We're still in need of volunteers for emergencies, especially as the gods appear to be missing and our burden may now be greater. Boil the water you gather if possible and stay warm. I don't think it's quite cold enough here to worry about this just yet, but if you believe someone is suffering from hypothermia: blankets and body heat are the best treatment, then warm fluids.

Thank you and be safe.

[ Please don't die, he'd be sad.

((OOC: Anyone can stop by/be brought in at any time to play out treatment, if you get hurt hunting or fall into the frozen lake when drawing water, and first aid lessons can be given by any Clinic staff! The list is here at [community profile] undersupplied.)) ]
ghostlocked: the guy who's never said anything regretful in the last 18 years (srs • just take it from me)

[Ah, yeah, Harlan's seen this guy around the clinic before. Cool. He nods at the question, but speeds past the pleasantries to get down to business, in typical Harlan fashion.]

Yeah, you too. Are you busy? I figured I could try to teach you Message.

[He does notice the slight change in temperature and is thoroughly intrigued... If Pell has space heater magic, that's certainly something Harlan wouldn't mind learning in return.]
ghostlocked: because that spell uses a lot of glitter (hmm • seems i contaminated a crime scene)

[Oh hey hold up, Harlan is immediately distracted by this crystal situation. He leans in to get a closer look, and then realizes it's warm, so he'll be standing next to it for the duration of this conversation.]

What is this?

[...]

Oh, uh, yeah, it's short range. I have a telepathy spell too, but that's not something I can teach. You have to be pretty good at magic before you can cast it.
ghostlocked: spooky or not spooky? (hmm • let's talk grasshoppers)

[There's an immediate alarm bell at the word "enchantment", even though it's pretty clear that that word doesn't mean what he expects it to. Hell, that was clear from the crystal setup. Enchantment magic by Harlan's standards doesn't work like this.

It's weird, knowing there are different types of magic. It's like there being different types of math. Two plus two should always equal four, shouldn't it? Or maybe it's more like languages. "Magic" in English versus... Whatever the word for "magic" is in some other language. Harlan is better at math than languages.

He takes the cloak when Pell offers it, looking it over.]

So, by "enchanted" you mean it's magical? Enchantment is mind control magic where I come from. This, I'm assuming, is not that.

[Unless Pell means the cloak just makes you feel immune to heat and cold and moisture, meanwhile you're actually sopping wet and on the verge of hypothermia. At least you'd be comfortable?]

I don't know much about magical items, sorry to say. My specialty's illusion and my brand of enchantment. I can do some transmutation too, but nothing like this. Sorry.

[He's still gonna check out this cloak, though. Something like this is pretty rare where he comes from.]

I can still try, I'm just not sure how much help I'll be.
ghostlocked: the very dark time of having to fight over who gets access to information or friendships (wtf • dialup incited so much famly drama)

[personal profile] ghostlocked 2018-12-09 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Good to know.

[He super does not need more iterations of enchantment magic in Hadriel, that's for sure. It's dangerous stuff.]

So you have to concentrate to keep the crystal generating warmth? What about the cloak?

[He hands the cloak back because, as expected, in his hands it's just... a really cool cloak. Man, he needs to see about learning Identify. People keep asking him to identify things.]

Yeah. Illusion is, uh, making shit look like other shit, you could say. It's a middle ground between conjuration and enchantment. You're conjuring shit, but that shit isn't real. I could conjure an illusory chair, for example, but you'll fall on your ass if you try to sit on it.
ghostlocked: just say 'dad, there are whores here' (hmm • don't say 'and stuff')

[personal profile] ghostlocked 2018-12-12 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
[He nods.]

That makes sense. My friend's got a ring that works a bit like that.

[He thinks? He doesn't know the specifics on how Kyna's ring works.]

That sounds useful, especially these days. Does it keep all of you protected, or just the parts covered by the cloak?

[Harlan's mind immediately goes to shit like, what if you put the cloak over your face and dove into the lake. Would it let you breathe? How can he cheat the system with it???]

Yeah, I use it for diversions. I know a spell that conjures a giant illusory snake, and I'll sic that on people to keep them occupied if my team's getting overwhelmed. A spell like that is strong enough to do damage if I want it to, too. If the snake attacks, it'll trigger one of those, uh... Psychosomatic? The illusion can't hurt them since it's not real, but it'll look real enough to trick their brains into thinking they're hurt.
ghostlocked: besides waking up and being a d-bag? (chat • do you have a morning routine?)

[personal profile] ghostlocked 2018-12-21 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, no. As long as the spell's active, the illusion bends to whatever the person does.

[Which is what makes illusion spells really fucking cool and also really fucking scary, depending on who you ask. For Harlan, it's a little of both.]

There are ways to break the illusion, but it's more about mental fortitude than lucksacking into it.
ghostlocked: i never find the ice cream because i get the shivers and leave (srs • when i get to the frozen aisle)

[personal profile] ghostlocked 2019-01-15 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Mostly, yeah. You have to concentrate to keep the spell active, but it's not... You don't have to stay focused on just the one spell. You can do other shit, including casting other spells, but you have to keep the illusion spell in the back of your mind to keep it running. It'll tailor itself to whoever you're using it against without you needing to do anything though, yeah.

[He's not doing a good job of explaining this, but it's a weird concept to have to explain. And as for the teaching...]

That spell? Probably not. I don't teach illusion and enchantment magic for a few reasons. It doesn't do much good against the Null, and fucking with someone else's head is dangerous.

[Plus, his students would need someone to practice on. He's willing to offer himself up as a guinea pig for most things, but not for that. He's not about to ask anyone else to do it, either.]

That said, it'll take some time before you're ready for that level of spell. You might get there quicker than others would given that you can already use magic, but you'd still need a focus. If you come up with a reason why you'd need the spell down the road, we can revisit the idea.

[In other words, it's not a flat no, but your social link needs to be higher to unlock this spell, buddy.]
