By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

[It's the shiny, golden pendant that catches her attention first.

The girl who approaches the prince looks anything but royal. She's skinny enough to be noticeably underfed with dark hair that falls messily into her eyes and too-small clothes that look ragged and lopsidedly patched up. There's dirt streaked over her nose and chubby cheeks and packed under her fingernails. The only thing that doesn't fit her whole street urchin look is the girl's expression, harsh and defiant, with a chin tilted up haughtily and a piercing gaze to match.

She moves closer to him, skinny arms crossed over her chest, peering intensely at the unfamiliar boy.] What are you even doing?

「Atem doesn't notice the girl — what's with those ears? — until she's almost right beside him. The question seems to confuse him a little because truly, he's doing nothing...」

What do you think I'm doing?

「Why is she so angry? What did he do now?」

I dunno, but it looks stupid.

[Harsh, but Lup's natural state is aggressive. She has to be to keep her brother safe with the rest of the world against them. And her experiences with other kids haven't necessarily been the best during her short life.]

「That is SUPER RUDE. His brow furrows slightly, and he scans her from head to toes.」

You look stupid.

「Ah well...」

[It's not the usual reaction one would expect after an insult like that, but the elf's mouth twitches into a small grin.]

Pretty sure that's you. Your ears are way too small for your head.

Your head is too small for yours.

「Why is she being so mean?」

What do you want?

Nu-uh. [She huffs a little, reaching up to run fingers lightly over her long ears up to the pointed tip. Just to check.]

I was just wonderin' what you were doin'. That's all. You were makin' a goofy face.

Uh-huh. 「Don't get him started-- oh... well that works. He flinches at that a little bit.」

Goofy face? No, I wasn't. I was just thinking.

「There, she wins.」

[Lup steps closer, just so she can peer out across the pool he'd been idly staring out over. She's looking to see just what was holding his attention, but there's nothing very spectacular there. Maybe he really had just been thinking.]

What about?

Stuff a little girl wouldn't understand.

「Hmph.」

[She whips her head around to shoot him a glare, mouth twisting into a pout.] I'm almost thirteen! How old are you?

「Is he blushing? Yeah, he is. All the way to the seemingly small ears and all.」

It doesn't matter! You wouldn't understand anyway!

[Ha! She sees that blush!]

Well now I wanna know more! C'mon, kid. Maybe an older kid like me will understand better than you think.

「Oh, that seems to ruffle his feathers a little more.」

Don't you know who I am? I am not a kid! Don't call me that!

[Oh dear, that reaction just has her laughing.]

You so are! You're just as much a kid as I am.

「Why is she laughing, Ra, help him! He stands and straightens as much as he can, trying to appear taller. It's not really helpful.」

No! I am the king and you must do as I say!

[For a moment, Lup looks absolutely unimpressed. Atem, with his skinny body and youthful voice, sounds just like her brother whenever he's trying to throw a little authority around.

But then her eyes drop back down to his pendant, shining and golden, and then down to the rest of his clothes, which aren't anything like her rags. Even if he isn't a king, he's someone.

Which means that, wherever he's from, he may have a hell of a lot more than just a single golden pendant stashed away.]

King of what? I don't even live here.

「He's a king, shut up!」

It doesn't matter! You don't stop being who you are just because you're somewhere else! I bet you don't stop being mean wherever you go, do you?

「He usually wouldn't get so worked up about something so silly, but times are rough!」

[Lup's been called a lot worse names than mean (usually by adults), so the insult comes and she just rests her hands on her hips and glares right on back at him.]

No, I don't. [at least she's honest] But I'd rather be mean than a bratty king who just wants to boss people around. At least I have friends.

[Er, one friend. Who is her brother. But that counts, right]

「That makes him flinch and cower, it lasts but a second before he tries to stand tall again, but he's shivering a little, his eyes glisten and his lower lips quivers. He bites it, hard.」

I have friends too!

「Not really no, they are not there, he's alone and on top of everything, he's being denied of his right as king, his father would be so disappointed.

The thought just worsens it, and his eyes prickle more but he doesn't dare to blink.」

Ha! [Lup catches that prickle of tears and she can't help but rub it in.]

Told ya so! [She just has to stick her tongue out in victory for that one.] Lucky for you, I happen t' make a pretty great friend.

「He manages to keep up with the act just for a bit more. Until she says that last. Lucky for him? What is she implying...? That makes him lower his defenses, if only a little bit, he blinks a couple of times, not that he could hold it any longer, and soothing warm threads fall from his eyes. Trying to hide it, not that it's not super obvious, he turns away from her and tries to dry his eyes off with the back of his hand really quickly.」

You're all talk, I don't believe you.

[Lup's been made a bully by other bullies, so it's like second nature to her to catch when someone is trying to hide their tears. She's caught Taako doing it a hundred times in the past, right before she'd come running to brawl it out with whoever was picking on her brother.]

I've been pretty honest with you so far, haven't I? I never lie. I'll be your friend. [a beat] If you'll let my brother and me crash with you. You must have'a giant palace, right? No one'll even know we're there! We'll be quiet. We just wanna place to stay. [Somewhere a little more permanent.]

Then we can play every day and stuff.

「Atem's eyes get a little bright at the invitation, he'd love to have a friend! And her brother too? That's just too good to be true.

Which just is anyway...

His little shoulders drop and he looks at his feet instead.」

I'm sorry, I don't know where home is... I don't have a place to stay either.

「After all, she was right from the beginning, he's no king here. And now he's gonna be alone forever.」

Oh dag... [Lup's ears droop a little at that, but she's not just going to give up on the idea completely. She can make this work.]

Well, maybe you can hang out with us until we find it. You ended up in this place somehow so sometime you gotta go back, right?
