By now, the gods have probably done enough weird crap to you while you're asleep for you to be a little suspicious- but it's not like you can just not sleep, especially when there are a few supernatural forces making your eyes droopy and your body feel heavy.

And now, when you fall asleep, you'll wake up somewhere else and you'll likely have quite a different temperament- you'll be younger, maybe a little more naive and innocent, and you won't exactly remember all the wild stuff that's happened to your adult self. Maybe now you'll be a little more trusting and emotional, hm? The gods could definitely use a little boost in power, and what better way to do it than to harness the power of overemotional kiddos!

Or maybe you aren't affected at all and find yourself surrounded by youths. What are you going to do when your best friend doesn't know how to cook for themselves? Or your bitter rival is throwing a temper tantrum because they broke their favorite toy? Nobody asked for this kind of responsibility, but think about what would happen if nobody was around to take care of these babies...

[ When he catches her he launches himself at her legs with a happy crow ]

Caught you, caught you! Abigail runs fast!

[Abigail pretends to be surprised.]

I do?

[She smiles.]

That means you must run fast too, because you caught me!

[ He beams up at her and nods ]

Cano did his best! Big brother Nelyo has very long legs, you see. [ He explains ] So Cano has to be fast to catch him!

Nelyo must be very tall.

[Abigail wonders if he's there, but doesn't want to ask - in case Cano is missing him.]

I don't have any brothers or sisters. Do you have other siblings too?

He is! Sooooooo tall. That's his nickname from grandfather even!

[ He shakes his head ]

Not yet - amil's baby isn't borned yet, but soon, Cano'll be a big brother too!

[Abigail grins playfully.]

His nickname is sooooooo tall? That's long for a nickname.

That's exciting! Amil, is that what you call your mother?

[ He laughs ]

Silly! 'Course not. Grandpa just calls him "tall"! Yep! Baby will be borned soon. He kicks a lot.

[Abigail smiles at having made him laugh.]

It's a boy baby then. That's exciting. Do you know his name?

Yes! That's what amil says.

[ He nods excitedly and then shakes his head ]

Not yet - amil doesn't like to say until the baby is borned, and atto likes to wait until after amil has given her name first. Nelyo got his first, but that's coz' he's the firstborn. Atto says he waited a whole two weeks before he named me.

Two whole weeks! I wonder what they called you during those two weeks. Cano must be a very special name since it took him so long to decide.

[She doubts her father took that long. He decided what she would be in the instant he knew he had a daughter.]

Is Atto your Dad? My Dad named me Abigail because it means joy of the father.

Dunno?

[ He giggles at the thought they must have basically been calling him 'the baby' or similar ]

Yep! And your atto must have loved you very much, that's a very nice meaning!

Cano's full name is... [ he pauses and screws up his face as he pronounces it slowly ] Makalaure Canafinwe. Amil gave me Makalaure... it means... um... forging gold? And atto gave me Canafinwe. It means... um... commanding? Finwe. Finwe is Cano's grandfather's name! All of us have finwe names coz of that.

He did.

[She leaves it at that. Cano is much too young to hear about the way her father loved her]

Your name has a very powerful meaning. And your grandfather must be very special to have all of you named for him. Do you know your grandfather? [She's never know her own grandparents. Her father kept her and her mother separate from any extended family.] Who gave you the nickname Cano?

Yep! Grandfather Finwe is the king! All his sons have finwe names, and atto wanted us to as well coz he's the firstborn.

[Abigail can't help wondering how many in Hadriel were royalty.

A king! Does that make you a Prince or a Duke or something?

Uhhh.

[ He considers ]

A ... prince? I think....Atto says it's only....ce-ceremonial? Coz Grandfather's not going anywhere.

[Abigail considers Cano's young age and figures his father is right. He's young enough to have a grandparent around for a long while.]

Of course he isn't going anywhere, not with a special grandson like you. A ceremonial prince is still cool. Maybe you can even do a ceremonial wave, like this.

[She gives a small royal wave, the type she's seen the queen use on television and giggles.]

[ He grins ]

Cano's only the secondborn, so's I don't even have duties like Nelyo does.

[ Poor Nelyo, always stuck in formal robes and going to grown up things, bleah ]

Ooh! [ He copies her and giggles ]

Should Cano do that for special occasions?

You're lucky. I'm an only child so I have plenty of chores.

[Mostly centered around hunting, and butchering the meat. She spares him those details]

Maybe. If that's what they do where you're from.

[She doesn't want to get him teased when/if he returns home.]

It's what the royals do in England. And eat tea and crumpets. And talk like this.

[She speaks with a fake British accent and grins.]

Maybe Abigail will get a little brother or sister one day? Cano was the baby for a long time until atto & amil decided they wanted another!

[ He tips his head sideways as he considers ]

Cano's seen grandfather wave sometimes, though not quite like that. Don't think he'd mind?

[ He laughs brightly at the accent and attempts to mimic her ]

[Abigail smiles, though she isn't sure if she wants a sibling. It'd be nice to have the company, but she wouldn't wish her father on anyone else.]

How does your grandfather wave?

[She giggles and nods at the accent, still speaking in one as well.

Yes, just like that. And you can say silly things like pip, pip and cheerio.

[ He considers and then waves at her enthusiastically ]

He does that to atto and uncle and Nelyo and me! Cano isn't sure how he waves to other people.

[ He giggles again ]

Pip pip! Cheerio! What does that mean?

That's a good wave! Lots of energy.

[Abigail has to think a moment. Her first thought is the cereal, but that can't be right.]

I think it's a way of wishing people a good day, like you're telling them to be cheerful.

Yes! He's always very happy to see us, coz we don't live near him. We visit every sennight, but grandfather always says its too long.

[ He considers that and giggles ]

Pip pip! Cheerio, Abigail! You should be happy always.

That's like once a week? That's not so bad, gives him just enough time to miss you without getting lonely.

[Abigail smiles, even though she knows she can't promise cheerfulness.]

That's very smart advice. You should always try to be happy too.

Yep! [ He grins ] It's coz Atto needs lots of space for his experiments and Amil likes peace an' quiet when she's sculpting, and she says Tirion's too loud. But we spend a whoooooooole two days every times we visit.

[ He hugs her ]
